The Information

The Information is an official Court document which sets out the charges laid against the accused person. It is usually sworn by a police officer and filed with the Court before the first Court appearance. The Information is brought to the Court every time the accused person has a court appearance. The Court clerk marks the information to reflect what happened in Court on each Court appearance (e.g. the Crown provided disclosure, a trial date was set, etc.). The Information is only used in the Ontario Court of Justice. If the matter is transferred to the Superior Court of Justice, a new document, called an indictment, is prepared and filed with the Superior Court of Justice.
